Rule 7 문두에 있는 분사구무의 의미상 주어는 반드시 문장의 주어와 일치해야한다.

(O) Without a friend to counsel him, he found the temptation irresistible.

Rule 11 능동태를 이용하라

능동태는 보통 수동태보다 더 직접적이고 힘이 있다.

(X) My first visit to Boston will always be remembered by me.

(O) I shall always remember my first visit to Boston.

(X) There were a great number of dead leaves lying on the ground

(O) Dead leaves covered the ground

(X) The sound of the falls could still be heard.

(O) The sound of the falls still reached our ears.

Rule 12 긍정문을 사용하라

확실한 주장을 하라. not은 반대나 대조의 수단으로 사용해야지 얼버무리기 위한 수단으로 사용해서는 안된다.

(X) He was not very often on time

(O) He usually came late

(X) He did not think that studying Latin was much use

(O) He thought the study of Latin useless

(X) not honest

(O) dishonest

(X) not important

(O) trifling

(X) did not remember

Rule 13 불필요한 단어는 생략하라

Rule 18 문장에서 강조하는 단어는 마지막에
